Wireless Endo Motor
Design of a dental instrument to production readiness

Background
A manufacturer of dental devices developed the first cordless endomotor in its product line. The contra-angle handpiece and file clamp were adapted from existing corded systems.
Our expertise in the development of complex medical devices enabled us to combine ease of use, functionality, hygiene, and safety in this dental instrument.
Challenge
Limited installation space and the target weight reduced design flexibility.
The motor, electronics, battery, and charging interface had to be ergonomically integrated.
Device design, device architecture, materials, and manufacturing processes had to take into account the extreme requirements placed on dental instruments in terms of hygiene, physiological compatibility, and sterilizability.
Conflicts of interest arose between:
-
Balance and weight
-
Leak-tightness and usability
-
Miniaturization and feature set
-
Plastic housings and precision mechanical engineering (drive)
Our contribution
RAKKOON developed the system architecture and the overall device concept.
Key areas
-
Component integration in the handpiece
-
Robust housing structure
-
Weight Distribution and Balance
-
Housing and sealing design
-
Selection of processes and materials
-
Supplier selection and series development

An unusual manufacturing process led to a key conflict in requirements.
Among other technologies, metal injection molding (MIM) was used.
We supported the client through the entire process until series production began, including the implementation of the new manufacturing process.
Result

The result was a compact, well-balanced, and robustly designed Endo Motor. The manufacturer successfully established a new product category.
